Romney sheep produce fleeces that are long and lustrous. Having the finest fiber diameter of the longwool breeds, Romney wool is a joy to spin. Rambouillet sheep are known for their fine, soft fleeces. Our gently washed Romney/Rambouillet fleeces combine these qualities and offer the handspinner a wide variety of colors and textures. The wool in many commercially prepared rovings is subject to harsh chemical treatments. Fibers are carbonized, having acid added to the wash to burn up any bits of vegetation. Fibers are often bleached before dying to create a completely uniform color. Our wool is never subject to harsh chemicals. Our fleeces are carefully skirted after shearing to ensure all fibers are of prime spinning quality. Each fleece is then gently washed individually in soap and softened water. Commercially prepared combed top produces a spinning roving that is smooth and compact. Our rovings are carded. The carding process preserves the natural crimp and elasticity of wool. Carded rovings therefore spin into a loftier and softer yarn. Some of our rovings have naturally occuring noils and neps from the carding process. This preserves a rustic charcter to these handspun yarns. Our rovings are for spinners who enjoy wool with variety and yarn with character.
